Why buy organic t-shirts?

Cotton is one of the largest grown crops and it represents approximately 40% of the world’s textile production. Since cotton fields are heavy on chemicals and toxins, these fields are extremely hazardous to our environment and health. Organic cotton is usually more expensive, but for good reason. Here are some of the reasons why:

1. The soil used for growing organic cotton has to be clean from chemicals for at least 3 years before planting can even begin.

2. If is very difficult to grow quality cotton without the use of insecticides, pesticides and other agricultural chemicals.

Nevertheless, the extra buck or two spent on an organic t-shirt will go a long way in preserving both our land and wildlife.

Two of my favorite brands that carry organic t-shirts are:

American Apparel
Love them or hate them, all of their garments are sweatshop free and their organic line of t-shirts are gorgeous.

Rêv-evolution by OÖM Ethikwear
OÖM is a Montreal based company that promotes products made from organic or organic free trade cotton. All OÖM garments are made by socially dedicated organizations in Quebec. And if that’s not enough, 2% of OÖM’s sales are donated to charities.

What do you love?

Did you know that the iconic “I ♥ NY” logo that promotes tourism in New York State (and not the city, contrary to popular belief) has been around since 1977? It’s true. Milton Glaser, the graphic designer who created the rebus even did the work pro-bono thinking that the campaign would only last a few months (!!)

Following the 9/11 attacks, a deep sense of solidarity was felt among all New Yorkers, including the tourists who slowly started descending back to the city. It was no surprise that souvenirs bearing the logo were on the rise again. Glaser who was 72 years old at the time even created an updated version of his logo, this time with the declaration “I ♥ NY more than ever” to honour the city and to commemorate the love that people have for the fabled city. This historical and award winning logo has been copied and adapted countless times since its first run 33 years ago. Certainly one of the most copied, I’m sure. The possibilities for its applications are really limitless.

What do you love in life? Tell everyone by creating your own “I ♥” t-shirt. Here are some examples to get your creative juices flowing:

What kind of statement is this t-shirt making?

I came across this t-shirt today.

 Balmain Slashed army t-shirt

Balmain Slashed army t-shirt

The description says: Go for stylishly dishevelled cool in Balmain’s olive green distressed detail cotton t-shirt. Work the runway look by teaming this statement staple with cargo pants and ankle boots for a luxe spin on utility chic. Shown here with Balmain shoes, jacket, pants and clutch.

Price tag? Guess. You’ll never guess…. Are you ready? Are you sitting down? You should… Sit… Brace yourself… Here it goes… Wait… Maybe you should get some water too…. I don’t want you to faint or throw up a little in your mouth… Go… I’ll wait… Yer back? Good… Ready? The t-shirt sells for one thousand six hundred and twenty five dollars. That’s $1625.

I really thought there was a typo. Is this “fashion house” for real? Has anyone purchased this t-shirt? and more importantly, why would anyone buy a t-shirt full of holes that looks like a military discard? We throw our old t-shirts full of holes out. Not buy one full of holes. It’s insulting to my intelligence.

So I ask you: What is the very maximum you would ever pay for an unbranded designer t-shirt? I’m really dying to know. Leave a comment here or fan us on Facebook and leave your answer on the the Wall.

If for whatever reason you actually like this t-shirt, here’s a tip: Wordans sells American Apparel t-shirts for $14.95 CAD and we even have ‘em in Army Green.

Save yourself the other $1610.05. At this price you can even afford to screw up your first sheering and slashing attempt ;)

Spring chickens and bunnies and chocolate

Easter is the most harmless and innocent of holidays, isn’t it? People don’t bitch about Easter like they do about Valentine’s Day or Christmas, or even Halloween. I don’t know if it’s because of the sorrowful religious implications, or because it’s the first holiday since New Years and people are just itching cabin-feverishly for a long weekend, or because of the association to baby bunnies, chicks and chocolate, or is it because Easter heralds-in spring. Either way, everyone seems to feel good about Easter and that’s awesome!

Here are some cool things you could do for Easter – with kids, or without:

But don’t forget the t-shirts! Here are some starting points for the whole family. Leave them as-is or add names or places. Customize these designs as much as you want or as little as you want, or upload your own!
